The Brief: We were given the honour of catering for an annual day out for 372 war heroes, organised by the Association of London Taxi Drivers at Worthing Pavillion. They all contribute a day’s wages every year in order to take out as many ex servicemen and women out for the day to the seaside. This was a daunting task with immense pressure! These people are true VIP’s, and we all wanted so badly to give them the best of the best. Many of the guests were elderly and needed special care and attention, yet, as you can imagine, were so proud and didn’t want to be mollycoddled by anyone!
The Planning: We spent many hours chatting to the main organisers who had the most experience of the guests and what they would like the best. We then took this information, and came up with a plan and menu that would allow for these extra factors, whilst delivering the best and smoothest service possible, leaving no room for error. In the end, we decided to go for a gourmet sausage and mash, followed by afternoon tea. To finish, we liaised with local ice cream stalls in order to bring in enough ’99 flake cones’ for all the guests. Simple favourites, done to the highest standard, and within the tightest budget we could manage.
The Feedback: What a fantastic day! I can honestly say that was my best day in catering. We all felt such a buzz to be able to do something small for such amazing individuals. All the guests and incredible taxi drivers were so happy with the day, and we couldn’t have been more proud!
